Direct-attached storage is a fairly basic, low-maintenance, low-cost solution where the storage system is a part of the actual host computer or connected directly to the host computer. This could be as simple as an external hard drive and it’s the opposite of network storage, where workstations and servers connect through a network.

Network attached storage (NAS) is an IP-based file-sharing device that’s attached to a local area network. NAS can serve a variety of clients and servers over an IP network. A NAS device uses its own operating system and integrated hardware and software to deliver a range of file service needs.

A Storage Area Network (SAN) is a centrally managed, high-speed storage network consisting of one or more vendor storage systems, storage management software, application servers and network hardware that allows users to access and utilize business information data. A SAN storage platform presents pools of raw data to a server infrastructure over a dedicated network connection.

Organizations of all sizes use Storage Area Networks (SANs) to increase storage utilization rates (i.e. multiple hosts accessing the storage devices), improve application performance and availability, and to heighten security and data protection capabilities. By presenting storage devices to hosts such that they appear to be locally attached storage, SANs also facilitate the presentation of storage to users.
